Generation of continuously tunable fractional optical orbital angular momentum using internal conical diffraction.

When a left-circularly polarised Gaussian light beam, which has spin angular momentum (SAM) J(sp) = sigmah = 1h per photon, is incident along one of the optic axes of a slab of biaxial crystal it undergoes internal conical diffraction and propagates as a hollow cone of light in the crystal. The emergent beam is a superposition of equal amplitude zero and first order Bessel like beams. The zero ...

Study of the influence of femtosecond laser polarisation on direct writing of waveguides.

Optical devices were fabricated in fused silica using the femtosecond direct write technique. We found that the transmission of light through directly written waveguides, whether straight or curved, can be increased by writing waveguides using circularly rather than linearly polarised radiation.

Broad-Band Chiral Reflectors based on Nano-Structured Biological Materials

In this work we study the reflection of circularly polarised light from a nano-structured biological material found in the exocuticle of scarabus beetles. This material is made of a stack of ultra-thin (~5 nm) uniaxial layers arranged in a left-handed helicoidal stack, which resonantly reflects circularly polarized light. A chirp in the layer thickness combined with a finite absorption coeffici...

Transverse focusing of spin polarised photocurrents

We measure transverse magnetically focused photocurrent signals in an InSb/InAlSb quantum well device. Using optical spin orientation by modulated circularly polarized light an electron spin dependent signal is observed due to the spin-orbit interaction. Simulations of the focusing signal are performed using a classical billiard ball model which includes both spin precession and a spin dependen...

Polarisation Vision: Beetles See Circularly Polarised Light

It has long been known that the iridescent cuticle of many scarab beetles reflects circularly polarised light. It now turns out that scarabs can also see this light, potentially using it as a covert visual signal.
